Gutter guard installation in Gainesville, GA, chosen for pine straw

Most gutter guards are designed around broad leaves. Hall County roofs get pine needles, oak tassels and shingle grit, and those behave differently. The installers we send will tell you which guard suits the trees over your house, and they will say so when the honest answer is no guard at all.

What do pine needles do to a gutter guard?

Not what the box suggests. A pine needle is thin enough to stand on end and slide through any opening wider than itself. On a screen or a perforated cover, needles spear the holes and stay there, and the next ones weave through them until the cover is wearing a mat.

A fine stainless mesh keeps needles out of the trough. They lie on top of it, where the wind takes some and the rest need brushing off once or twice a year. That is ten minutes from a ladder, against an hour of scooping.

Oak tassels are the other half. In April they land wet, stick to the mesh and dry into a crust. A guard that sits at the slope of the roof sheds them better than one that lies flat.

Which gutter guards get installed here

  • Micro-mesh on an aluminum frame. The one that makes sense under pines. It screws to the front lip of the gutter and is pitched with the roof.
  • Perforated aluminum covers. Fine under hardwoods where there are no pines. They cost less, they are sturdy, and they lift out for a cleaning.
  • Reverse-curve hoods rely on water clinging to a rounded nose. In a Georgia thunderstorm a good share of it overshoots, and tassels cling to the nose. Rarely the right pick here.
  • Foam and brush inserts fill with grit and sprout seedlings within a season or two. Most installers around here spend more time pulling them out than putting them in.

What gutter guards do not do

They do not end maintenance. They trade a scooping job for a brushing job and stretch the time between visits. They also do not fix a gutter that is pitched wrong or hung on loose spikes, and they make both harder to see.

On a low ranch under pines alone, ten years of yearly cleanings and a set of good mesh come out close. On a three-level lake house, or under oaks that need two cleanings a year, the mesh pulls ahead.

Before the guards go on

An installer worth hiring cleans the gutter first, flushes the downspouts, tightens the hangers and checks the pitch, because all of it is about to be covered. Ask whether that is in the quote.

If the gutter needs work, the gutter repair happens before the guard. If the gutter is at the end of its life, guards belong on new gutters.

In a neighborhood with an HOA, a guard that shows from the street may need a nod from the architectural committee. Mesh that sits below the shingle line usually does not show.

What do gutter guards cost per foot in Gainesville?

It depends on the type more than on the house. Perforated covers sit at the low end and framed micro-mesh at the high end, priced by the foot, installed. Gutter guard prices per foot.

Can mesh be added to my existing gutters?

Yes, if the gutters are sound and pitched right. Mesh guards are made for five-inch and six-inch K-style gutters, which covers nearly every house here.

Does a guard that tucks under the shingles hurt the roof?

It can. A guard that lifts the shingles breaks their seal, and some shingle makers will not honor a warranty claim on that edge. The mesh the installers we send use fastens to the gutter and the fascia, or rests on the shingle edge without lifting it. Ask to see which before the first screw goes in.
