Gutter repair in Gainesville, GA, before the fascia pays for it

A gutter that sags or drips is usually a small job. The board behind it is not. Call when you first see the drip line on the siding, and the gutter pro we send will rehang, reseal or re-pitch the run, and tell you plainly if the gutter itself is finished.

What goes wrong with gutters in Hall County

Most gutter repairs here come down to one of five things.

  • Water running behind the gutter and down the fascia. The gutter was hung without a drip edge, or straw piled at the roof edge is wicking water backward.
  • A belly in the middle of a run. The spikes have backed out of the wood, or the hangers were set too far apart to carry a trough full of wet straw.
  • A steady drip at a corner. The sealant in the miter has dried out, which takes about ten years of Georgia sun.
  • A clean gutter that still pours over in a thunderstorm. The run has lost its pitch, or it is a five-inch gutter under a long roof valley.
  • A downspout hanging by one strap. Usually a mower, a bumper or a limb.

Sagging gutter repair and the fascia behind it

Most gutters hung before the nineties are held by seven-inch spikes driven through the front lip, through a metal sleeve and into the fascia. Every wet season works them a little looser. Driving them back in holds for about a year.

The lasting repair swaps the spikes for hidden hangers that screw into the board, set every two feet or closer, and resets the pitch toward the downspout while the run is loose. On most houses that is an hour or two of work.

If the screws will not bite, the wood is the problem, and fascia repair comes first. The soft length of board is cut out and replaced, primed on every side, and the gutter goes back on sound wood. Where the rot has reached the underside of the eave, soffit and fascia repair are done together.

Emergency gutter repair after a storm

A limb comes down in a July storm and takes the corner of the gutter with it. If a section is hanging, stay out from under it and keep the kids and the dog away. Twenty feet of aluminum does not weigh much, but it comes down edge first.

When you call, say that it is hanging. The first visit takes down what is loose, caps the open end and gets the downspout working, so the next rain has somewhere to go. The permanent repair follows once the roof edge and the fascia have been looked at.

If a tree did it, take pictures before anything is moved. Your insurer will ask for them.

Should 20-year-old gutters be repaired or replaced?

Seamless aluminum that was hung right lasts well past twenty years, so age alone is not the reason to replace it. Repair makes sense when the metal is sound and the trouble is at the hangers, the corners or the pitch.

Replacement makes sense when the gutters are sectional, with a seam every ten feet and several of them leaking. It also makes sense when the front edge is creased or pulled out of shape, or when the gutter was always too small for the roof above it. If it is time, the gutter installation page covers what a new run involves.

Gutter cleaning and repair in one visit

Most repairs are found with the gutter empty, so the two jobs go together. If you are booking a gutter cleaning and already know about a drip or a sag, say so when you call. The pro brings hangers, sealant and a few feet of matching downspout, and the fix happens the same morning.

Asked about fixing gutters in Gainesville

Is it expensive to fix gutters?

Less than most people expect. Rehanging a run or resealing a corner is a small job. Replacing a section, or the fascia board behind it, costs more. What gutter repairs cost here.

Can a handyman fix a gutter?

A good one can rehang a run. What gets missed is the pitch, the sealant that belongs in a gutter (which is not caulk from the paint aisle) and the condition of the board behind it. Those decide whether the repair lasts one season or ten years.

Will homeowners insurance cover gutter repair?

Often, when a storm or a fallen tree did the damage, less your deductible. Wear, rot and clogs count as maintenance and are not covered. Your agent can tell you in one call.

Do you repair gutters somebody else installed?

Yes. Nearly every repair is on a gutter that someone else hung, often decades ago.
